2012 Military Bowl postgame notes

Military Bowl Notes:

  • The No. 24 San Jose State Spartans are the highest-ranked team to ever play in the Military Bowl.
  • San Jose State junior quarterback David Fales, the 2012 Military Bowl MVP,  set the bowl record for passing yards with 395. He also placed second in Military Bowl history in completions (33) and third in completion percentage (76.7%).
  • Bowling Green’s John Pettigrew also got his name in the Military Bowl record books with his 52-yard third quarter kickoff return. The return ranks as the second -longest kickoff in game history.
  • With only one turnover apiece, BGSU and SJSU combined for a Military Bowl low two total turnovers. The teams secured the ball well, and neither gave up the football until the second half.
  • 2012 marked the second consecutive year in which an interim head coach has led his team to a Military Bowl win. San Jose State’s Kent Baer took over head coaching duties earlier this month, and the win marks his first as a head coach. He previously served as interim head coach for Notre Dame in the 2004 Insight Bowl.

San Jose State Notes:

  • The Spartans finished the season 11-2 (5-1 WAC), the team’s first 11-win season since 1940.
  • Quarterback David Fales was 33-43-0, with a 76.7% completion percentage, better than his nation’s best regular season average of 72.06%.
  • With two more field goals today, Spartan freshman kicker Antonio Lopez finished the season a perfect 17-17 in field goal attempts.

Bowling Green Notes:

  • Bowling Green ended its 2012 campaign 8-5 (6-2 MAC). The Falcon’s eight wins are the most since 2007.
  • Redshirt junior Matt Schilz’s 16 completions gives him 701 total for his career, good for 18th all-time by a MAC quarterback.
  • In addition to his 52-yard kickoff return, senior running back John Pettigrew ran the ball seven times for 59 yards and an 8.4 yards per carry average, higher than his season average.
