Davis Sherwood
NOTRE DAME TIGHT END NAMED GO BOWLING
MILITARY BOWL STEM SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
University of Notre Dame tight end Davis Sherwood, a senior majoring in science-business, has been named a Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete.
Sherwood, who is from Greensboro, N.C., has a 3.9 grade-point average while on a pre-dental path. His favorite class at Notre Dame was organic chemistry. He hopes to join his family’s oral surgery practice, where he often works and shadows when not at college.
Sherwood said he is interested in dentistry because of the ability to impact a patient’s well-being in a holistic way. He also has taken an interest in working with underserved populations and those who might not typically have affordable access to dental care, from preparing supplies for a team of dentists going on service trips to working with local marginalized groups.
Additionally, Sherwood has participated in extensive service work in the South Bend community. He has volunteered with the Boys & Girls Club, the Ronald McDonald House, the Logan Center and the local homeless shelter. With the Notre Dame football program, he participates in Uplifting Athletes events, benefiting the local rare disease community through financial support and special experiences for patients. He also volunteers with Out of the Garden, a food insecurity project, and as a football coach.
“Davis was a pleasure to have in my class! Davis was never afraid to offer his perspective on complicated issues, which often differed from other students,” said Marie Donahue, associate teaching professor at Notre Dame’s Eck Institute of Global Health. “As I got to know Davis, I saw a compassionate and thoughtful young man eager to use his talents and privilege to serve in the field of dentistry. He embodies our mission of ‘using science in the service of humanity.’ ”
The Go Bowling Military Bowl is proud to announce the members of the fourth annual STEM Scholar-Athlete Program, recognizing some of the brightest minds competing on the gridiron in the ACC and the American Athletic Conference.
“The Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program honors an amazing group of young men who truly showcase what it means to be a student-athlete,” Military Bowl Foundation President & Executive Director Steve Beck said. “We are thrilled to honor this group of talented players for their success on and off the field while continually challenging themselves in the classroom.”
The Go Bowling Military Bowl STEM Scholar-Athlete Program honors one football player at each university that is a member of the ACC and the American Athletic Conference – the two conferences that are represented in the Go Bowling Military Bowl college football game. These players are studying STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) subjects and/or aspire to STEM careers.
The two players whose teams compete in the 2024 Go Bowling Military Bowl will be recognized at the game, which takes place on Saturday, Dec. 28 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. Kickoff is at 5:45 p.m. ET and the game will be televised on ESPN. Bowl tickets are on sale now. A donation will be made in the name of these two players to their respective school’s general scholarship fund.
