DC TOUCHDOWN CLUB WEEK 5 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: JACOB WETZEL, WALKERSVILLE

Jacob Wetzel finds himself all over the field for the Walkersville Lions. He plays running back on offense and safety on defense. He also returns kickoffs and punts.

But Walkersville’s scouting report for its Frederick County heavyweight matchup against Linganore this past weekend indicated that the Lancers liked to go with a high, short kickoff. So the Lions coaches moved Wetzel into a receiving farther up the field. The opening kickoff didn’t go to Wetzel, but it didn’t matter – he knew from that play that he was into the game.

“I got pumped up because I trucked a guy and that got me going,” Wetzel said.

Indeed, Wetzel capped the opening drive with the first of his four touchdown runs. He finished with 197 yards on 20 carries and led Walkersville to a 40-10 victory, extending its winning streak to 19 games. For his efforts, Wetzel was named the DC Touchdown Club High School Football Player of the Week powered by Under Armour.

“He’s just a really great player on offense, defense and special teams,” Walkersville Coach Joe Polce said, noting that Wetzel also had six tackles on defense.

While Wetzel enjoys playing football, he plans to play baseball in college. He has accepted a scholarship offer to play for Old Dominion University.

“Nothing else is like football, the atmosphere is crazy,” Wetzel said. “But I love baseball too and I know I’ll be more successful in baseball.”
