2011 MILITARY BOWL PRESENTED BY NORTHROP GRUMMAN SET FOR DECEMBER 28 AT RFK STADIUM

Navy to meet team from Atlantic Coast Conference in D.C.’s annual bowl game

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Washington Convention and Sports Authority (WCSA) and DC Bowl Committee announced today that the 2011 Military Bowl presented by Northrop Grumman will be held on Wednesday, December 28 at RFK Stadium starting at 4:30 p.m. ET. The game, which benefits the USO, will be televised live nationally on ESPN for the fourth straight year.

This year’s bowl game will feature the Navy Midshipmen against an Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponent. Navy played in the inaugural bowl game in 2008, losing to Wake Forest 29-19 at RFK Stadium.

“Last year we rebranded the bowl game to better reflect the game’s mission of recognizing and supporting our nation’s military so we’re especially pleased to have the Naval Academy scheduled for the game at RFK Stadium this year,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of the WCSA’s Sports, Entertainment and Special Events Division. “The nation’s capital is a prime destination, and this bowl game provides a nice boost to our local businesses and hospitality industry during the holiday season.”

As part of its overall mission and in tribute to the nation’s capital and military, the Military Bowl includes service academies Navy and Army and Conference USA in rotating years against the ACC.

Last year Maryland defeated East Carolina, 51-20, before a bowl-record 38,794 fans.

“Keeping the game during the heart of the college football bowl season was our primary goal,” said Steve Beck, executive director of the Military Bowl. “Now we focus our efforts on building on the success of the first three years with our new brand and charitable partner USO.”
